The Canzonetta Ensemble Strozzi Project

Richard Kolb's interest in the music of Barbara Strozzi began in 1996, when he performed some of her works at a festival of music by women composers in Kassel, Germany. Strozzi's then little-known music made such an impression that it attracted the attention of the music publisher Furore-Verlag. At their request Kolb edited two volumes of Strozzi's music, which were among the first practical modern editions of her works. Years later, after extensive study of mid 17th-century vocal chamber music in connection with his Ph.D. dissertation at Case Western Reserve University, he was inspired to publish more of Strozzi's music. This began as a revision of his earlier editions, but rapidly growing interest in Strozzi’s music led him to expand the project into the first modern edition of her complete works in eight volumes, published between 2014 and 2019 by Cor Donato Editions.  The Canzonetta Ensemble has now begun an ambitious project of recording significant portions of Strozzi’s music, beginning a two-CD recording of Opus 8 with Elissa Edwards, the first part of which is soon to be released.

With the recent publication of the eighth and final volume of Richard Kolb’s edition, all of Strozzi’s known works are now available. They can be purchased in both print and digital formats, as complete volumes or individual pieces, from Cor Donato Editions.
